IPL to be hosted in South Africa | Indian Premier League 2009 | IPL 2009

South Africa has emerged as the winner to the 2009 IPL. The decision was made after a meeting between the Lalit Modi, and the South Africa chief executive, Gerald Majola, in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Johannesburg, Durban, Centurion, Port Elizabeth, East London and Cape Town are the host venues.

With the decision now made, the Security arrangements - which forced the tournament out of India - needs to be arranged, and players and officials will require visas and accomodation. 59 matches will be held over a six week period. The Length of the IPl chedule has been shortened to 5weeks

Taking part in Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of Kannada Film Industry that was held last evening in Bangalore, his speech indeed fetched best appraisals from Karnataka’s Chief Minister Yediyurappa himself.

Speaking fluently in Kannada, Kamal Haasan uttered, ‘In no way Politics and Film Fraternity should be mixed for they’re alike Oil and Water… Film Industry is alike a train journey where people can get in without differentiation of caste, creed, religion or any such hurdles. Patently, I consider Kannada Film Industry as my aunt and sister to Tamil Film Industry.

Also added, ‘My identity as Tamilian can never be changed… But I was very much inspired from my mentors; Gundu Rao (Nagesh) and Dr. Rajkumar… Of course, I’ve whole lot of friends from film industry and arts B Saroja Devi , Girish Karnad, P Lankesh, Kasaravalli, Ananthamurthy, Puttanaji, B.V.Karanth and others. Getting on with his close friend Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan said, ‘Shivaji Rao Gaekwad is my best competitor and we both are students in Tamil Film Industry.’

Finally, Padmashree concluded his speech saying, ‘Kindly invite me to the 100th year celebration of Kannada Cinema and don’t ignore me calling ‘Avaru Ondhu Mudhuka’ (He’s an old man). Around One Lakh people had turned up for the occasion and applauded with high spirits for Kamal Haasan’s warm speech in Kannada. Chief Minister Yediyurappa felicitated him with a Shawl and Silver Plaque.

Though Super Star Rajinikanth’s name was included in the invitee’s list, he didn’t grace over for the occasion…

Infosys BPO | Transaction-based pricing

Infosys BPO said it was seeing traction with transaction-based pricing model as customers look to convert their capital expenditure to operational expenditure while fighting an economic downturn. “Customers are increasingly looking at adopting the transaction model as cost-cutting becomes imperative,” said Gautam Thakkar, Vice-President and head of F&A, Infosys BPO.

The finance & accounting (F&A) practice of Infosys BPO, which employs about 5,000 people including MBAs and chartered accountants, contributes to about 48 per cent of the company’s earnings from back-office services. For the December quarter, Infosys BPO reported revenue of $67 million and a net income of $10.8 million. About 18 per cent of Infosys BPO’s earnings are derived from services offered under a transaction-based pricing model and the company expects to see an increase going forward, Thakkar said. Infosys BPO’s clientele in F&A includes global customers in banking, manufacturing, telecom, publishing, media and entertainment, automotive services and distribution sectors.

Major boost

Infosys BPO’s F&A practice got a major boost in 2007 after it acquired Philips BPO’s captive operations for $28 million and got a $250-million, seven-year deal. Further, Infosys BPO has started offering higher value services such as financial planning, analysis, financial reporting and budgeting that currently accounts for seven to eight per cent of the BPO earnings, Thakkar said.

Earlier, the company was offering F&A services such as accounts receivable and accounts payable. Thakur said the company would continue with its platforms strategy and is investing in developing different platforms. Infosys BPO had launched its procure-to-pay platform in August when it restructured its procurement business. Research firm Gartner recently awarded a positive rating for Infosys BPO’s F&A practice for its vendor capabilities. Gartner’s Marketscope for Comprehensive Finance and Accounting Business Process. Outsourcing-2008 evaluated 11 vendors, including Infosys BPO, for the report.

Freida rises while Aishwarya gets the flak

She's been catapulted straight to Hollywood. Freida Pinto, the poised, smiling beauty that Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire" has thrown up on the global stage, has done what few Indian actors have managed to do before her. From Om Puri to Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan to Ayesha Dharkar - everyone has worked in Hollywood films but none has tasted instant, mainstream fame like Freida. Even the glamorous Aishwarya Rai, 35, who has been adjudged India's most bankable star in Hollywood by Forbes, has taken her time to journey there. But not Freida, 24. The younger model-turned-actress from Mumbai has already walked the Oscar red carpet, shone in the multiple Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" and is set to sizzle on popular magazine covers, with just one film to her name."Freida's was a fresh face that was exposed in an international project. That worked to her advantage since she did not have any baggage attached with her. She is this fresh girl, good with English who can carry herself and that's why (she is) liked by many," film critic Omar Quereshi told.

"Most Indian actresses first concentrate on Bollywood films and then are picked up by Hollywood directors for international projects. So their prime focus has always been Bollywood," he said. Freida is one of the luckiest Bollywood actresses, having been to the Academy Awards, that too, right at the beginning of her career. Even the Bachchan daughter-in-law, Aishwarya, who is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, hasn't walked the Oscar red carpet yet. Thanks to British filmmaker Danny Boyle's film, Freida has been exposed to instant international acclaim that any actress would die for. She has already bagged Hollywood director Woody Allen's next project. She will share screen space with the likes of Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin in the movie. With Aishwarya the scene was that she got projects since she was Miss World and had also done Bollywood films. That's why Freida's success looks more prominent since she emerged from nowhere and has done a good job," said Quereshi.

While Freida has been hailed by the international media for her performance, Aishwarya has been panned by critics abroad who feel she is wooden in "The Pink Panther 2". Freida has bagged the Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. The latter took home the best actress prize at the Elle Style Awards too.

The stars are certainly shining for India's newest export to the world, Freida.

The Randeep Sushmita Smooch

Sushmita Sen is not at all happy these days. It is because of her new movie ‘Karma aur Holi’ in whichshe is playing the lead along with Randeep Hooda. The issue is that Sushmita is not happy with a kissing scene with her one time boyfriend Randeep and is cribbing that the producers are using this footage to gain in more publicity. As reported by a leading tabloid, Sushmita said, “My problem is that the makers of Karma aur Holi are promoting the film by sending out sleazy stories. This is not done. This is not the way to promote a film. These obnoxious strategies of promoting a film are simply unethical”.

We tried getting in touch with Sushmita but she remained unavailable for any comments. We did get in touch with Randeep Hooda who had once got the opportunity to date the beauty queen. He stormed in saying, “I think one should just do their job. Everyone was doing their job. There are a lot of actors involved, a lot of technicians, production people, directors, producers involved in the film. By just going to the press and lashing out statements is a very unethical thing on Sushmita’s part”.

When asked about the fuss she is making to remove the much-hyped kissing scene between her and Randeep, he said, “I don’t know anything about it so I think it is logical for me not to even comment on it”. Seems like Sushmita is having a hard way in this matter, with lashing out everything openly to the press, we wonder what she really wants. We just hope she gets justice to it.

Rajasthan Cricket Association election - Modi Loses

Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has suffered an embarassing defeat in the election for the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) of which he was president since 2005. Modi lost 13-18 to a state government official, Sanjay Dixit, in Jaipur on Sunday. The defeat is a personal setback for Modi though it will not affect his position as vice-president of the BCCI since he is also on the board of the Punjab Cricket Association. "The RCA elections have nothing to do with Modi continuing as the vice-president of the BCCI and as chairman and commissioner of the IPL," Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, said.

The BCCI had appointed Modi as its vice-president till 2011 and IPL chairman till 2013. However, the defeat means that Modi will not be eligible to vote during the Indian board's general body meetings. Modi, who was close to the previous administration in Rajasthan, was facing resistance at the local association from a group of dissidents ever since a new government took over following state elections late last year. "I paid the price of being close to Vasundhara Raje (former chief minister of Rajasthan)," Modi told reporters after the defeat. "The state government did whatever it could to defeat me."

Local police had also lodged a series of cases against Modi over the last month on various charges, including fraud and forgery.The dissidents, meanwhile, amended the RCA's constitution with the backing of the state administration and called for elections on February 22. The Supreme Court, however, upheld a plea by Modi who questioned the election process as per the amended constitution and sought the court's intervention to ensure a free and fair election. The court appointed an independent observer to conduct the elections on March 1.

In the build-up to the elections, Modi had said that some IPL games may be shifted out of Jaipur, the base of Rajasthan Royals, this season if there was any opposition from the local government. However, he ruled out that possibility after losing the elections. "There will be no effect on IPL matches; they will be held in Jaipur only," Modi said.
